Getting started

Install & set up Surface on macOS or Windows

Don't have the app yet? Download Surface →

Requirements: macOS 12 Monterey or later · Apple Silicon or Intel.

  • Download Surface.dmg from the download page.
  • Open the .dmg, then drag Surface into your Applications folder.
  • Open Surface from Applications. It's signed & notarized by Apple, so it launches with no Gatekeeper warning.

Keychain prompt: on first launch (and when you connect an account) macOS may ask to use your Keychain. This is Surface securely encrypting your sign-in and connected-account tokens on your device — they never leave your Mac. Click Always Allow and you won't be asked again.

Requirements: Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit).

  • Download the Windows installer from the download page.
  • Run the installer. If Windows SmartScreen appears ("Windows protected your PC"), click More infoRun anyway — the Windows build isn't code-signed yet, so this is expected and safe.
  • Surface installs and opens automatically. A shortcut is added to your Start menu.

On first run, create your account (or sign in), then choose what to connect. Connecting an account lets Surface automatically import your documents:

  • Gmail / Outlook — import PDF attachments from your email.
  • Google Drive / OneDrive — browse and import files from cloud storage.

Connecting is optional — you can skip it during onboarding and add accounts any time from Settings. Account tokens are stored encrypted on your device (see the Keychain note above), never on our servers.
