See it in action
A minute with Surface
Watch how a question becomes an answer — with the exact source highlighted.
Features
Stop filing. Start finding.
AI search, e-signature, client intake, and PDF tools — everything your practice runs on, in one place.
How it works
Three steps to clarity
No training required. If you can type a question, you can use Surface.
01
Connect your sources
Link Gmail, Outlook, Google Drive and OneDrive, or just drag files in. Upload scans and photos too — OCR makes them searchable.
02
Organize by client
Tag each document by client and matter. Everything stays scoped to the file it belongs to.
03
Ask anything
Plain English questions. Answers with the exact source highlighted every time.

Compliance
Built for Ontario lawyers, by design
Every lawyer using ChatGPT for client documents risks violating LSO Rules 3.1-2 and 3.3-1. Surface was built from the ground up to make compliance effortless.
US-hosted AI tools are exposed to the CLOUD Act — meaning foreign governments can legally access your clients' data. Surface keeps everything on Canadian soil, so you can point to real data residency as proof of reasonable measures.
Canadian servers
Hosted in AWS Montreal (ca-central-1). Data never leaves Canada.
Data Processing Agreement
A DPA is available on request for firms that require one.
Per-matter isolation
Each client's files are fully isolated. No cross-contamination.
Audit logs
Full record of who accessed what and when — always.
About
Why I built Surface
Before building Surface, I spent a year working in legal administration. What struck me wasn't the legal work - it was how much time disappeared into simply finding things. Which email had the letter. Where the signed copy went. What a client said in a meeting six weeks ago.
Meanwhile, the tools that could help were either six-figure enterprise systems built for large firms, or general AI tools like ChatGPT that quietly send sensitive client data to US servers - a real problem under the Law Society of Ontario's confidentiality rules.
I'm a Software Engineering student at the University of Waterloo, and I built Surface for the solo practitioners and small firms caught in the middle: people who need modern tools but can't compromise on confidentiality or afford enterprise pricing.
Everything Surface does runs on Canadian servers, built to meet LSO requirements - because the people doing this work, and the clients they serve, deserve tools they can actually trust.
