Compliance
Built for Canadian lawyers, by design
Canadian lawyers owe their clients confidentiality and technological competence - duties set out in the Federation of Law Societies of Canada's Model Code of Professional Conduct, adopted by law societies across Canada (in Ontario, LSO Rule 3.3-1 on confidentiality and Rule 3.1-2, whose commentary addresses technological competence). Surface is built to help you meet them.
The Federation added a duty of technological competence to the Model Code in 2019, tied directly to maintaining privilege and confidentiality. US-hosted AI tools are exposed to the US CLOUD Act, which lets foreign governments compel access to client data. Surface keeps every document, embedding, and backup on Canadian servers — so you can point to real data residency as part of the reasonable measures your obligations call for.

About
Why I built Surface
Before building Surface, I spent a year working in legal administration at an Ontario firm. What struck me wasn't the legal work - it was how much time disappeared into simply finding things. Which email had the letter. Where the signed copy went. What a client said in a meeting six weeks ago.
Meanwhile, the tools that could help were either six-figure enterprise systems built for large firms, or general AI tools like ChatGPT that quietly send sensitive client data to US servers - a real problem under the confidentiality duties every Canadian lawyer owes their clients.
I'm a Software Engineering student at the University of Waterloo, and I built Surface for the solo practitioners and small firms caught in the middle: people who need modern tools but can't compromise on confidentiality or afford enterprise pricing.
